Q & A with an Expert Healthcare Recruiter

We recently asked our Vice President of Healthcare Recruitment, Jeremy Fondren, a few questions about his experience and the latest pulse on the healthcare recruitment industry.

Here’s the insight he gave us.

Tell me a little bit about yourself and your background.

I have over 16 years’ experience in the healthcare search arena, covering a broad range of leadership positions within hospitals and healthcare companies nationally.  Clients come to me to help them “muscle build” their organizations with top talent.  A small sample of senior leadership positions I’ve filled are:

  • Chief Medical Officer
  • Chief Operating Officer
  • Chief Financial Officer
  • Chief Compliance Officer
  • Vice President, Human Resources
  • Vice President, Revenue Cycle Services
  • Vice President, Finance
  • Executive Director, Internal Audit

If you weren’t in talent management, what would you be doing?

Social Worker. I believe the listening skills I have acquired and helping people as a recruiter would cross over well into the social work field.  I enjoy helping people in any aspect and for the last 16 years it has been extremely fulfilling to help clients and the candidates I’ve placed to achieve their goals.

What are some challenges employers should be aware of in the healthcare searches at the moment?

The current challenges that employers should be aware of are the COVID-19 Pandemic and the effects it has had on current leaders and potential new leaders and the resulting economic uncertainty. These two factors lead to the pool of active candidates being smaller, due to relocation concerns and passive candidates being less likely to make a move, due to perceived stability in their current roles. Specialized healthcare recruiters like us have deep insight into the industry and have a unique advantage of leveraging our networks to source quality candidates to seriously consider the roles we are recruiting for.

What kind of advice can you offer job seekers in the healthcare industry?

I would tell them to stay connected with their associations, networking groups, and industry-specific recruiters. These are the people in the know in their industry. Make sure your resume is up-to-date and don’t be afraid to ask for tips on your job search from this group.

Where do you see the employment market going in the next 12 months?

As long as the current uncertain employment market continues over the next 12 months, we will see it challenging for employers to recruit the top talent on their own. Therefore, don’t just rely on passive recruiting for important positions, rely on a trusted adviser such as a dedicated search firm like Newland Associates Executive Search, who has extensive experience in your field and who will ensure they present you with qualified, top talent.
